Why Spay and Neuter Your Pet
Ovariohysterectomies (spays) and castrations (neuters) are safe, routine surgical procedures performed at all Pieper Veterinary primary care locations. These procedures provide important health and behavioral benefits and are strongly recommended by our veterinarians.
- Reduces cancer risk: Lowers the risk of mammary cancer in females and testicular and prostate disease in males.
- Prevents life-threatening conditions:Eliminates the risk of uterine infections such as pyometra and reduces the risk of certain hernias.
- Improves behavior: Helps reduce urine marking, roaming, and hormone-driven aggression toward people and other pets.
- Prevents unwanted pregnancies: Helps reduce pet overpopulation and unplanned litters.
What to Expect When You Spay or Neuter Your Pet
Prior to surgery, your doctor will perform a full physical exam and pre-anesthetic screening tests. On the day of the procedure, your pet will be cared for by our surgery team, including admission by a veterinary technician, continuous anesthetic monitoring, and personalized pain management. You will also receive clear home care instructions following surgery.
Your veterinarian is always happy to discuss spaying or neutering and answer any questions specific to your pet or the procedure.
